  • Case Study

Interim Programme Director reporting to a main board director of the largest publishers in Europe.  We were responsible for the design of a company wide (4 major subsidiaries) publishing system covering editorial, production, publicity, sales, marketing and other back office functions. Responsibilities included managing the design of the application as well as full integration with legacy systems and business to business (B2) automation with a new data warehouse providing a full 360 degree view of the book business from inception to completion.  Full integration with and redevelopment of more than a dozen web sites was undertaken to complete the solution.  This project began with a comprehensive process review using both internal and external people across all areas concerned with the development and sales of new titles.

Technology employed included:  MS SQL Server 2005, .NET 2, BizTalk and other MS 2007 products such as SharePoint, Project Manager Enterprise, Office products and Cognos 8. Software was developed offshore (India) with onshore design and project control.  We defined outsourcing and technical standards and acted as the main interface with the offshore service company.  We oversaw the collection and documentation of user requirements, as well as reverse engineered and documented several large disparate legacy applications developed onshore.

We set up a Programme Management Office, developed project management standards, governance and risk analysis procedures, whilst interfacing with senior executives, including in-house IT (65 staff).  We managed third party vendors to  obtain the industry’s best publishing system. Completion occurred on time and on budget several months after we handed over to new full time management.  Project value was approximately £4m.
